In Search of the Perfect Lobster Roll in the Seaport

boston restaurants

When it’s summer in New England, lobster rolls are an absolute must. This quintessential seasonal treat is perfect whether you’re fresh off the beach or out on the town. While indulging in a lobster roll does require answering some key questions (To add celery or not to add celery? Hot with butter or cold with mayo?), we believe the most important question of all is: Where can you find the best one?

Here at 7 Tide, we’ve done the hard work of investigating the options, and we can definitely vouch for these Seaport locations when it comes to your search for this summer staple.

Yankee Lobster Fish Market

300 Northern Ave

If you’ve never visited Yankee Lobster, take it from the seasoned patrons: There will be a line. And for good reason! This casual spot offers outdoor seating, takeout options, and, if the reviews are any indication, possibly the best roll in the Seaport, which will be bestowed upon you in a classic paper-lined basket. No fuss here—just the good stuff. The wait is definitely worth it.

Legal Harborside

270 Northern Ave

For something a bit more upscale, head to Legal Sea Foods’ harbor-front location. With three floors, each with distinct offerings, there’s a vibe to fit any occasion. Stick to the first floor for the classics, plus an oyster bar and seafood market. Sip on a refreshing cocktail right by the water while you indulge in a traditional, by-the-book lobster roll. You really can’t beat the view, or the menu, which includes full lobster entrees, plenty of fried seafood platters, oysters, shrimp cocktail—you name it, Legal has it.

The Barking Crab

88 Sleeper Street

If you have a penchant for the homey, old-school New England vibe, the atmosphere at The Barking Crab is just the ticket. With a ceiling adorned with lobster traps and string lights, rustic picnic table seating, and a menu full of seafood favorites (including an expansive raw bar selection), the Crab has all you need for a true coastal dining experience. Looking for some variety in your lobster roll? Look no further. There are three to choose from here: the classic celery-mayo-lemon combo; the “naked” roll with lobster freshly poached in drawn butter; and a rotating seasonal roll that adds a unique twist to this classic favorite. Tuck in to the roll of your choosing and soak in your hearty surroundings.

Luke’s Lobster

53 Northern Ave

Another casual go-to is Luke’s Lobster, a cozy shack serving up Maine-style lobster rolls. If you’re looking to shake things up, they also offer crab and shrimp rolls, plus seafood combo plates, clam chowder, and lobster bisque—everything one needs for some serious seafood indulgence. Try the Luke’s Trio for a half-serving each of the crab, shrimp, and lobster combos. What more could a New Englander ask for?

Ocean Prime

140 Seaport Blvd.

For those looking for a luxurious lobster experience, there’s fine dining destination Ocean Prime. With a visually stunning interior and elegant ambiance, this eatery offers upscale takes on lobster rolls, crab cakes, scallops… the works. They’re known for their incredible steaks as well, so if you happen to be out with someone who doesn’t love lobster (we’re not here to judge), you’re covered. For the best of both worlds and an unforgettable meal, go for the decadent Surf & Turf: an eight-ounce filet and a butter-poached lobster tail.

We’re famished. Is it summer yet?
